The Information and Records Management Society (IRMS) today announced that Calum Liddle, the legal research lead at Facebook’s Office of the Data Protection Officer (DPO), will give a keynote presentation on ‘The Journey, Challenges, Structure and Strategy’ of his team at its IRMS Conference 2020 – Information and Data: The Heart of your Organisation.
Calum Liddle has worked in the office of the DPO at Facebook since December 2018, advising the Controller on the social media firm’s data protection obligations on projects as wide ranging as Calibra, the Facebook wallet for a new virtual cryptocurrency, through to Oculus and virtual reality ambitions.
In his keynote, Calum will talk about the challenge of creating an entirely new function for the DPO within a multinational company whose business touches almost every major hot topic in the area of data protection and privacy – grappling with the single most significant piece of legislation affecting Facebook’s business, in the midst of an extraordinary political and social context.
Based in London, Calum is the co-founder of the London Data Protection Practitioners Network, a pre-eminent group of privacy experts. Prior to joining Facebook he worked as a case officer at the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), as well as holding senior roles in local government and the NHS. He was also a volunteer for the Campaign for Freedom of Information in Scotland while undertaking a PhD in comparative freedom of information legislation at the University of Strathclyde.
Chair of the IRMS, Scott Sammons states: “We are excited to have Calum Liddle speaking at the IRMS Conference 2020, giving our delegates a great opportunity to gain insights regarding how Facebook runs its Office of the Data Protection Officer, and to learn lessons that they can take back to their own organisations. As well as his high-profile role, Calum has a wealth of experience across the information management field, and I am sure this will be a very keenly-anticipated keynote.”
The IRMS Conference 2020 takes place on 17th – 19th May 2020 at the Hilton Metropole hotel near the NEC in Birmingham and is widely regarded as the go-to event in the information management calendar. Registration is open now at www.irmsconference.org.uk.
